Construction material and all other parts should be strong enough to hold up to the largest, strongest horse you will be hauling. Camping in a tent is great fun, but sooner or later you will finally say enough is enough. I remember when it happened to us. We had set up our tent in a pretty campground along the Missouri river. Unfortunately the owner had skimped on the size of the washroom. It was a long weekend and the park was full. We awoke in the morning and the washroom was our need. Sure enough, there was a line up of eight for the ladies and two for the gents. That was the morning we made the decision to buy our first RV.It is a daunting task to begin the search. Anyone who knows travel trailers knows that units come in all different shapes and sizes. We soon realized we would need to buy a small one as we had an older car with a big 6 engine.

Mistake number one. We searched and found a small ten foot long fiberglass unit that must have been thirty years old. Now we had two old units. The car and trailer.
Mistake number two. We traded for a fifteen foot fiberglass. It was fifteen years old in nice condition. We hit the road for a trip cross country. It rode well pulling it with the old car. Second day out it rained as we drove. When we stopped the front window had leaked all over the upholstered seats. We tried our best but could never find how the water came in.
Mistake number three. We traded for a twelve year old twenty foot European model. Too heavy for the car. Traded for a van. That was a nice rig. Worked well. Then we decided to spend the winter in Arizona.
Mistake number four. Traded for a new twenty five footer and the van for a three quarter ton truck. Took it to Arizona for the winter. It worked fine for us but was a little small for six months of living. Finally after enjoying the rig for two more years we realized our medical travel insurance was getting way out of hand for traveling in the USA from Canada so we sold everything and purchased a small car.We realized that our biggest mistake was at the very beginning. We should have taken at least a few months and checked out all of the trailers and the vehicles that are required to tow them. We should have stopped by some campgrounds and asked people who were trailer owners what they thought about their rigs. After all there are so many types available. We should also looked at motor homes.

Hindsight now leads us to believe that we would have looked at how we were going to use the trailer. Short or ling trips. Short or long stays. Now, when you’re not towing anything, your receiver hitch can be fitted with all kinds of goodies to make your truck or SUV more functional and more comfortable when you need to transport your toys, or even do a little work.You’ve probably seen a hitch mounted bike rack before. These handy items can carry up to five bikes, and some will let you tow a trailer or attach another accessory besides. I’m a big fan of trailer hitch winch mounts (handy on both the front and the back of your vehicle) and hitch mounted tow hooks.If you need to transport something really long (think lumber, ladders, and canoes), you can purchase bed and roof extenders which are vertical metal supports with a crosspiece at the top which will support any cargo longer than the bed of your truck or the roof of your vehicle. I’ve even seen trucks with these roof extenders mounted on both front and back hitches for carrying extra long canoes.One of the most over-the-top trailer hitch accessories is a hitch mounted grill. These grills are great for tailgate parties, camping, boating, or almost any outdoor activity where you want to cook. The grill mounts to your receiver hitch when you’re ready to go, but swings away from your vehicle for grilling. It even comes with a back yard stand if you want to use it at home or take it off your vehicle once you get to your destination.Speaking of destinations, I often see trucks with ATVs in the back. And I often wonder how the ATVs got in there. If you are one of those people who drives your ATV into the bed of your truck, you might want to check out hitch mounted ramp supports which protect your tailgate when you want to drive an ATV or other heavy equipment into the bed of your truck. Pretty handy, I say.If you’d rather tow your ATV, but don’t want to bother with the expense or trouble of a trailer, you can get a special bar which allows you to tow your ATV behind your vehicle. And if you’ve got two ATVs, you’ll need a twin ball hitch, which is basically an 8 foot bar that hitches to your receiver and has a hitch ball attached at each end. With an ATV hitch bar, you can tow two ATVs side by side, eliminating the need and cost of a trailer!Finally we come to the cargo carrier which is one of my favorite trailer hitch accessories. Hitch mounted cargo carriers can basically be described as metal platforms that are 48 to 60 inches wide and 20 to 24 inches deep (that’s how far they stick out from behind the vehicle) with a shank that mounts into your receiver hitch. That sounds simple enough, but there are many features to consider for your cargo carrier. Many of the platforms fold for storage when not in use. Some fold up from the shank toward the back of your vehicle, so they don’t stick out behind you. Some have hinges in the platform so it can fold in half. When these are mounted and folded, they stick out behind you, but not to the sides. Some even fold twice this way, making them smaller to store when not in use.

Most cargo carriers have a metal mesh platform that is lightweight and easy to clean, making them the ideal place to carry messy or dirty items that you don’t want in your car. The height of the side rails on the platform varies, but all can be used with a cargo net or straps to hold your cargo securely. You can also purchase weather proof cargo bags to fit your carrier and keep your items clean and dry as you travel. Some cargo carriers include a cargo box which is generally made of heavy duty molded plastic and locks for security; these are often big enough to hold four sets of golf clubs. Travel Trailer and Wheelchair?

Finding a hotel that was pet friendly and handicap accessible was such a challenge. Some that were “handicap accessible” merely had a hand rail in the bathroom.At this same time I was looking for a place to store inventory for the business I run from the house. We agreed a small travel trailer might be the answer for both storage and travel. Don was primed and ready to go. He read the” for sale” ads and he talked about it constantly.Finally we found a used travel trailer at a price we could afford. It could serve as warehouse and provide a way to travel with an invalid husband and our dogs. We, my helper and I, loaded Don into the car and we all went to see it. Don was so excited, he fidgeted in his seat all the way to the location and strained his seat belt trying to sit upright to be able to see this “New” trailer. This would be the first time in his life he would not be able to do a personal up close inspection of an item we were considering purchasing. The seller was a friend so we trusted his description of the condition of things that could not be seen openly.

I went into the trailer and gave it my once over to see if Don would be able to maneuver in the tight quarters. It seemed doable so I went back to the car and explained what it was like inside. But Don HAD to get out and see this thing up close. I pulled the auto close to the trailer, stopping when his passenger side window was in line with the entrance door that was swung. To help him to see inside the trailer I lowered the passenger window. Before I knew it he tried to open his door to get out. I quickly ran around to his side of the car and asked what he wanted to do. He was going to get into that trailer if it killed him!My helper and I slid him out of his seat, getting his feet onto the ground and helped him to the open trailer door where he could lean in and look inside. To my surprise and delight, he lifted his one leg to put his knee inside the doorway and was trying to climb into the trailer. We quickly assessed the situation and pushed-pulled him inside the trailer onto his hands and knees so he could crawl in.Once inside we sat him on a couch where he could see the interior for himself. He sat for quite a while as I investigated closets and appliances and asked questions about the trailer. With his nod of approval we purchased the trailer and made arrangements to bring it home.Once the trailer was brought home I installed grab bars anywhere I could. His wheelchair would not fit through the door. To get him into the trailer I stood behind him as he held onto the strong grab bar outside the trailer and placed one foot on the step and I pushed him up to the next step until he was “in”. For him to move around inside the trailer he had to hold onto the grab bars and/or furniture and pull himself to where he wanted to go. He needed assistance to stand upright but was able to balance and pull himself from one piece of furniture to the next.We did get to the Poconos for a week, with our dogs- a state park that had been a favorite of ours for years. I had never pulled a trailer before that summer. Not sure I ever want to do it again. By the end of the week Don was getting around inside the trailer pretty well – much better than on day one. I was exhausted, but glad we had the time together.

The trailer was brought home and parked in the driveway. Don’s Parkinson’s progressed. On warm days we opened the trailer to let it air and would have a camp style lunch at the table inside the trailer, sitting in the booth looking out the window and imagining we were camping. We did not go camping again.He has not been inside the trailer in 2 years. He still directs me to check on it and open the windows to air. The time has come to part with the trailer. I am not sure how he will take the news, or if he will even notice it is gone. I hope he retains the good memories of our time shared inside this home on wheels. I will never forget his joy and determination climbing into the trailer to inspect it for the first time.
